Ways to Gain Citizenship in Turkey

There are various legal ways for foreigners who wish to acquire citizenship in Turkey. The most common of these is the citizenship by investment programme. In this context, foreigners who purchase an immovable property worth at least USD 400,000 can apply for Turkish citizenship if they fulfil certain conditions. In addition, persons who reside in Turkey for at least 5 years without interruption and fulfil certain criteria may also obtain citizenship.

In addition, marriage with a Turkish citizen, lineage and exceptional circumstances are among the other ways to acquire citizenship. Foreigners who have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years can apply for citizenship when they meet the necessary conditions. In addition, persons who make significant contributions to Turkey in the fields of science, economy, culture or sports may be exceptionally accepted for citizenship.

In order to apply for citizenship, an application must be made to the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs together with the necessary documents. The process may vary depending on the status of the applicant and is finalised depending on the evaluation of the competent authorities.
